About This Manual
LawBandit's Legal AI Manual teaches lawyers how to use generative AI in practice. It covers:
how AI Technology Works
the Ethical Rules
practical Approaches
We wrote this manual specifically for lawyers, law students, and legal professionals who want to understand what AI can do and where it falls short, so they can integrate it into their daily work.
Why Read This Manual?
The goal of this manual is to help you become "competent" using AI as defined by Model Rule 1.1 and particularly comment 8 which states:
"To maintain the requisite knowledge and skill, a lawyer should keep abreast of changes in the law and its practice, including the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology, engage in continuing study and education and comply with all continuing legal education requirements to which the lawyer is subject."
As AI adoption in legal practice continues to rise, courts across the country have issued standing orders requiring lawyers to disclose their use of AI in filings, and Bar associations (such as NY) have published formal guidance on generative AI use.
The question now becomes whether lawyers will use the technology competently or ignorantly.
Most lawyers
have not learned to use AI well:
Some are waiting to see what happens
Some are skeptical of the benefits
Some have adopted it, but are misusing it
But a few
are reaping the benefits. They:
Understand which tasks AI handles well
Know how to prompt for useful output
Know how to verify results
Have built workflows that save hours
When a solo practitioner with AI can match a small firm's pace, the practitioner without AI faces a structural disadvantage. In short, law is ripe for AI disruption; those who adopt AI solutions will gain a competitive advantage by working faster and more efficiently than others. This manual provides the building blocks to attain this competitive advantage.
